A game of two halves

O.W. Strollers 6 PFFC 0 (cup)

Kadeem, 15 December 2013

The less said about the first-half the better.

It was a very slow start for the Philosophers, who had to start with 10 players as Will was running late and other players hadn’t turned up.

It says a lot about the game that Old Wimbledonians missed a penalty but still went in at half-time five goals up.

An inspired half-time team talk from Ally and Andrea and a much-needed break allowed the Reds to regroup and show the opposition what they were really made of. Within a minute of the start of the second half, the Reds strung together a few passes and a teasing cross from Will was met acrobatically by Luca, whose overhead kick narrowly went wide.

Realistically, it was an impossible task to overturn a five-goal deficit – which was confirmed when the sixth went in – but there can be no denying that the second 45 minutes was a hundred times better.

Just as they started a man down, Philosophy ended the game with 10 men after Mario (on his birthday) was sent off for an off-the-ball incident. Overall, it was a very disappointing end to 2013.

After the game, Will raised the point that Philosophy have never been a good cup team. Let’s hope that 2014 brings a very positive run in the league.
