Long losing streak continues

PFFC 0 Sporting Falcons 5

Owen, 30 January 2011

Unfortunately, as the unofficial statistician at PPFC, it is with extreme reluctance that I have to report that the Thinkers have just posted a fifth consecutive defeat, which equals the club’s worst run in the modern era. The last time we lost five consecutive games was in the 2007/8 season, a streak that began on 11 February 2008 and ended with a 2-2 draw with Boodle Hadfield on 7 April. However, the signs of a revival are evident. We showed a tremendous spirit and resilience against the high-flying table-toppers and with some intricate passages of play and long periods of possession in the second half, PFFC had every right to feel hard done by with the score line. I was astonished that we didn’t at least register on the score sheet but, as Jimmy Greaves often reminded us on a Saturday afternoon in the 1980s, “football is a funny old game”.

Philosophy Football FC should not feel downcast or depressed because it just so happens that I know of the most famous anthem dedicated to triumph over adversity that even the most leaden hearted Evertonian could secretly enjoy (I know this to be true as I have witnessed such during the more harmonious and successful years both sides enjoyed in the 80s). I call upon all Philosophers past and present to join me in a rousing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone. It’s worth reminding ourselves of those powerful lyrics:

You'll Never Walk Alone
R. Rogers/O. Hammerstein II

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark

At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

Even Hibernian managed to end their dreadful ten match winless streak this week in the SPL. Here’s to a much-needed win and three points this coming Sunday.
